Woman Falls into Coma, Dies from Prolonged Persecution in Police Custody
(12/3/2002 2:28)Ms. Fenghua Li, a 44 year-old female Falun Gong practitioner from Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province was kidnapped by police from a police sub-bureau in October 2001. She was later sent to Xigemu labor camp for one year and endured severe brainwashing. Under the brutal persecution she suffered in Xigemu, her health deteriorated, her blood pressure rose to 220, and she began to fall into frequent comas. At last she was forced to give up her belief in Falun Gong.
On May 8, 2002 Ms. Li’s elder sister died from extreme stress from concern over her younger sister, knowing the persecution she was suffering.
Ms. Li was released the following month, only to be kidnapped again by police from police sub-bureau in mid-September. A policeman told her relatives: “The 16th party congress will be held soon. All homeless Falun Gong practitioners in our province must be arrested and sentenced heavily. If you don’t want her to be jailed, then use her husband and her daughter [who are also Falun Gong practitioners] in exchange [for her].”
After suffering in detention for two months, Ms. Li was reduced to skin and bone and fell into a coma again. When her relatives questioned what caused the coma, the police from the city, sub-bureau and detention center all denied any responsibility. She never awakened from her coma and passed away on November 8, 2002. Her relatives have appealed to the law over her case, but the local court refused to accept any cases related to Falun Gong. In an attempt to arrest Ms. Li’s husband and daughter, her body was used as bait and interned in a hospital before cremation with plain-clothes police closely monitoring the scene. Now her younger daughter is left at home alone without anybody to take care of her. (12/3/2002 2:28)
