An Elderly Monk Dead After a Year of Persecution
(12/3/2002 2:23)Mr. Zhongquan Mei’s life as a monk taught him discipline and persistence, and in the end he was forced to draw on this experience in a struggle for his life.
In the Spring of 2001, Mr. Mei was kidnapped from Yangfu Temple in Wushe City and taken to the Wushe Detention Center. He had been targeted by local police and officials of his temple as a Falun Gong practitioner. He protested his illegal detention by going on a hunger strike for 9 days, but had to wait several months before being released.
A few months afterwards, Mr. Mei was spotted practicing Falun Gong exercises in a temple doorway in Anhui Province, and was detained again by local police. He was returned to Wushe where he endured severe psychological and physical abuse during brainwashing sessions held in the Wushe City Communist School. During the brainwashing sessions he was repeatedly beaten by police, and finally released on bail through the help of friends. Mr. Mei returned to the local police bureau to retrieve his books containing Falun Gong teachings and principles, and was immediately sent back to brainwashing class. At this point, the 60 year-old monk had suffered more than a year of brutal physical and psychological torture.
The local “610 Office” authorities could see that his health had severely deteriorated and that he was near death. In order to avoid responsibility in case of death, Mei was released and he passed away 20 days later.
