China’s Jiang Fighting Terrorism with Terrorism
(10/23/01 13:43)

President Bush, pleased with his meeting with Chinese president Jiang Zemin last week, declared confidence that China is fighting the war on terrorism "side by side with the American people."

Indeed, a sharp contrast from a previously tense relationship between the two leaders, marred with a spy plane ordeal and the US tabling of UN human rights censures against China, year after year. What so quickly changed the favor of the Chinese head? A genuine concern for the tragedy Americans have faced? A true desire to eliminate brute terrorism in the world?

Unlikely. Actually, President Jiang’s motives in this should inspire some serious thinking and concern.

Last Thursday, with world dignitaries preparing to begin the APEC forum, Chinese media announced they’d faced an Anthrax attack. In a wild story, they claimed a booklet about Falun Gong was mailed to a US company inside China with the suspected substance. The US government has been in the front lines against the Chinese crackdown on Falun Gong and it seems unlikely that anyone sending anthrax would attach info identifying their group. Falun Gong has been entirely peaceful even during two years of horrendous violence and brutality from the Chinese regime.

Chinese leaders were trying to say “Look America, Falun Gong is just like terrorists. Our persecution is a war on terrorism.”

This stunt attempts more than to distract attention from human rights abuses against Falun Gong, it is a blatant attempt to use the American tragedy to fuel president Jiang’s attack against the practice. Where’s the real terrorist?

When president Jiang decided Falun Gong was too popular for comfort and launched his crackdown on the previously praised and awarded practice, he established a state-terrorist organization called the “6-10” office (referring to June 10, 1999, when he created it) at central, provincial and municipal levels across China and set it above all legal and judicial bodies. Its sole mandate is to defame and brutally torture, brainwash and persecute Falun Gong practitioners.

Orders from the top are that “No means are too excessive to exterminate Falun Gong” and “Falun Gong practitioners’ deaths will be counted as null and labeled as suicide.” AP recently reported a young female Falun Gong practitioner beaten to near death and then thrown from the fourth floor so police could avoid responsibility for her beating. Her death was labeled “suicide” and her husband told “try suing us if you can.” Over 40% of recorded Falun Gong deaths are claimed as “jumping” or “falling” from high places or moving vehicles.

When 18 women were stripped of their clothes and thrown into a male criminal cell to force them to give up Falun Gong, the guards responsible were asked to travel to other labor camps to share this idea. 300 deaths ranging from 8-months-old to senior citizens have been reported. Sources in the Chinese government admit the true number is over 1000.

Across China, the whole society is used as a tool in the persecution of Falun Gong. University entrance exams carry a question slandering Falun Gong. Even top students who don’t answer as expected can be denied education or worse. Amnesty International has labeled president Jiang a “human rights scoundrel.”

At a UN meeting in August, International Education Development stated, “State terrorism in the form of government terror against its own people…produces far more gross violations of human rights than any other form of terrorism…Such is the case in China with the regime's violent assault on practitioners of Falun Gong.”

If Chinese leaders are trying to use the US tragedy to fuel their own terrorist campaign, what will make them trustworthy in the future? One New York Times journalist suggested if the US lifted the ban on arms sales to China we might see those weapons used against US soldiers in defense of Taiwan when China decides to attack.

Some suggest Bush will overlook China’s human rights to gain a powerful ally, however, president Jiang’s motives are in question and a true effort to eliminate terrorism cannot ignore what’s happening in China. Ignoring evil in the world is wrong and pretending it wont come back to harm us is entertaining a myth. President Bush beware: China’s Jiang may be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
